What You Need to Know About Cast-In Place Anchors

When you cast an anchor bolt in wet, unset concrete, this is known as a cast-in-place anchor. Anchor bolts are typically installed directly into foundations and surrounded and filled with concrete. Once this work is done, the only part of the bolt exposed will be its projecting thread. 90-degree bend anchors headed anchors, and anchors with rod threads are among the most common configurations for anchor bolts that get cast in place. These components are often used when there are considerable embedment lengths. They can also come in handy when high tensile strength is necessary.

Helpful Information About Post-Installed Anchors

When an anchor bolt is installed after concrete bases have been set, this is known as a post-installed bolt. After the concrete has fully cured, you will drill a hole into it and then put your anchor bolt into this hole. You can use adhesive anchors and mechanical expansion anchors in this application.

MEAs expand after they’ve been put into drilled concrete. They’re designed to expand after installation so that they bear against the surface of the concrete. One very common type of MEA is a wedge anchor. It is easy to install an MEA, but these anchors have limited tensile strength. As such, they are not intended for use in high-tension zones where concrete cracking is likely to occur.

Like MEAs, adhesive anchors are also placed into pre-drilled holes inset concrete. They have a special adhesive that bonds to anchor rod threads as it dries. This adhesive additionally bonds to the surrounding concrete. These anchors are fully threaded and are offered in a diverse range of finishes and grades. If you need it, we offer cutting services for adhesive anchors. We can cut these components to any size you need for your intended application.

Understanding the Standard Bend Radius on a Right-Angle Anchor Bolt

Bent bolts adhere to the guidelines set forth in ASME B18.31.5. These specifications dictate that the bend radius and interior diameters will be as determined by the manufacturer and the buyer. The dimension for each is dependent entirely upon the characteristics of the materials being used. Thus, there really isn’t a standard guideline for the radius of a right-angle anchor bolt’s bend. One of the many determining factors for the bend radius is the type and standard of equipment used by the part manufacturer. Lucky for you, we always use very high-end equipment when custom producing these products.

When you source these components from substandard manufacturers, there is always the risk of defects. These come from using low-quality or outdated manufacturing equipment. Although there are no standard specifications for bend radii, there is the prerequisite that these components do not have any cracks on their outside portions. Moreover, the bent portion of these anchor bolts must have a cross-section that’s at least 90 percent of the area of all portions that are straight. We often use a bend radius that is two times the bolt diameter. We are also able to produce these components with a bend radius that matches the plans for our customers’ projects.

What About Bolts That Are Fully Threaded?

Mountain View Supply Co can also accommodate orders for certain fully threaded bolts. We have handled an expansive range of projects in the past and do not place any significant limitations on what we are able to do in terms of custom orders. If your engineer has requested fully threaded bolts, simply contact our design team to share your plans and needed specifications. We will let you know what we are able to accomplish, at what cost, and according to what time frame. There are several ways in which we are able to thread bolts, including bolts that are fully threaded from end to end for special projects. They are as follows:

Cut thread bolts are another type of bolt that we can fully thread upon request. These can be threaded as close to one inch from their head. This, however, depends upon the style of head used. Countersunk bolts, heavy hex heads, hex heads, and square heads will allow us to grasp the bolt as close as one inch within the head. Timber, carriage, and rounded heads will have to have unthreaded shank measuring at least three inches.
